Moam Racing

MOAM RACING TEAM

Abbreviation: Men On a Mission

MISSION:

Moam is for friendship, comradeship and our passion for bikes, desire to race and enjoy riding outride’s together.

HOW IT ALL STARTED:

August 2006 In Witsieshoek Resort in Qwa-Qwa after an awesome riding day in the mountains, Martin(Tjopper), Charl(Scaly), Johan(Hubley) and me (Stefan, Scary) sat in a room sharing a bottle of Captain Morgan. I tested an idea that was [mauling] in my head for some time. It was taken up immediately and we brainstormed over a name. In the end we mutually voted on Hubley’s proposal: Men On A Mission.

The four founding members swore Friendship and bike in that night.

Brian (Fatass) and Paul (Patch) were the first two members sworn in the very next day. So the 6 of us went home with big aspirations.

WHERE ARE WE TODAY:

The BMW Club Pretoria, GS Group had a big influence on the early days as many of the initial members was members of that club.

After all these years we grown to 25+ members, we ride together, we pit and race together and we social together. We even go sometimes on holidays together.  Our passion is still as strong as day one and our respective families respect and understands our passion and desire to get dirty. Normally a pit crew is available at each race to add professionalism, comfort and comrade.   We are not unique in principle. Similar Fatties & Moanies and K-DOG teams inspired this idea.

Although not frequent riders we have our female riders, in all cases related to male members, in the team as well

WHO IS AND CAN BECOME PART OF MOAM?

Although we originally had an important rule that you must ride at least two social rides and do at least 1 race per year to become a member the rule was altered recently due to economic climate in the country.

A lot of thought went into who can become part of this elite group and the following informal rules at the moment apply:

1)      A proposed member must be invited by an existing member and ride at least two social rides with three or more members

2)      A proposed member main objective in becoming a member must be riding dirt bikes

3)      A proposed member must naturally fit in with the “group”, either riding OR riding and socially.

4)      Each member must buy a Moam Race shirt that must be worn on race day. This will be ordered at least once every year.

5)      Any brand of bike is welcome, even if it is not a Honda.

6)      In the end, after all above is in place you will become automatic a member if you want to.

7)      Some initiation ceremony will take place for new members.

Existing members:

1)      Must strive to race

2)      Must pit at least once a year

3)      Can invite friends to ride with us

4)      Can at any time call a braai at his house after a ride, even without his wife’s permission.

5)      May at any time call for a buddy for a ride and 4 will probably pitch.

SOCIAL

Besides the local social rides and races we must also strive to do social riding weekends away. A Social day will be held at least once a year, always connected with a tagged team event of some sort. The year-end weekend is the highlight of each year.

Although we are an unregistered Social Racing team we are currently arguably the biggest racing team in the country today, even bigger than the works Yamaha and KTM teams. To keep a personal touch to this team it would not be ideal to grow over 30 riders. What we have is unique and special.  Riders out there envy us, everybody in the regional racing scene knows about us. I am proud to be a MOAM member
